Charles Edwin (Ed) Branson, 89, of 18 Pershing Street, Thomasville, passed away at KBR Hospice Home, Winston Salem, on April 14, 2021. He was born on Nov. 19, 1931, in Davidson County to J. O. and Kathleen Bodenheimer Branson. He graduated from Thomasville High School in 1950, then attended NC State to study agriculture. In 1952 he joined the US Air Force and served in Korea and at F. E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming. In 1953 he married Jeanette Elliott Branson, who preceded him in death August 27, 2020, after 67 years of marriage. After returning from service, he joined his father in operating Branson’s Auto Service, a Thomasville business that served countless loyal and new customers from its creation in 1935 until it closed in 2018. A family business, Ed was able to work with his sons and grandsons at “the shop.”
As long as they were able, Ed (“PawPaw”) and Jeanette spent every weekend at High Rock Lake where PawPaw’s greatest joy was fishing on his boat or pier with friends and family. When he wasn’t fishing, he was planting azaleas, tulips, and more in his garden. He was the master of Christmas morning pork: bacon, ham, sausage, as well as the gas grill on weekends. Country and Blue Grass music had no more ardent fan than Eddie Branson; he and Jeanette took numerous trips to Branson, Mo., Myrtle Beach, Nashville, Pigeon Forge, and many local venues.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his son, Charles E. (Herb) Branson, II, and his grandson, Daniel Elliott Branson. Eddie is survived by daughters, Carolyn Jones and husband, Gary; Katie Ballard and husband, Tommy; son, Elliott Branson and wife Patti, and Herb’s wife, Karen Kearney Branson. His grandchildren include Rebecca Jones, Ben Jones; Clay Ballard and wife, Savannah; Sarah Ballard Gaither and husband, Patrick; Nathan Branson, Kyle Branson, Ian Kearney, Hilary Branson, Addison Branson, and Charles E. (Charlie) Branson, III; three great grandchildren: Kallie Branson, Patrick Daniel Gaither, and Anna Elizabeth Gaither. He is also survived by two brothers, Joe Don and Sam Branson. The family is forever grateful to his compassionate caregivers of two years: Sharon Sink, Nancy Tate, Shelia Leak, and Ben Jones.
A funeral service will take place 11:00 AM on Monday, April 19, 2021 at Memorial Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Danny Leonard and Rev. Sandy Young with interment at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, which will include the Air Force Honor Guard and Davidson County Honor Guard performing military rites. The family will receive friends at the J. C Green and Sons Funeral Home on Sunday, April 18, 2021 from 6:00 to 8:00. The family asks all those who attend the service and visitation wear a mask per state guidelines to protect everyone from Covid 19. Memorials may be directed to American Cancer Society, Pastor’s Pantry of Davidson Co., or United Memorial Methodist Church. Online condolences may be sent to www.jcgreenandsons.com.
