APPALACHIA SERVICE PROJECT:  DONATIONS NEEDED!

JUNE 27 – JULY 6
LESLIE COUNTY, KY

This summer, Memorial UMC will have the opportunity to serve in the Appalachian Mountains once again!  Last year due to the pandemic, formative trip for our Youth and Adults, was cancelled, but fortunately, we believe that we can safely make the trip and once again serve the families of Appalachia!

BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Since we were unsure if we would be taking this trip until late in MAY of this year, we have not been able to participate in our normal fundraising activities.  Our Stock Sale, Car Wash and Lenten Lunch funds were not able to be earned and we hope to continue our track record of making ASP a “self-sustaining trip”, meaning we are able to raise enough funds so that no operating budget funds are used.  This goal will ride solely on the generosity of our congregation!

Just to give you a snap shot of the cost, we typically expect to raise around $500 per participant for the trip.  (This is the minimum for team fees, van rentals, and costs associated with supplies that is coordinated by ASP)  This year, we will be taking 21 people on our trip (3 teams of 7, or 6 adults and 15 youth).  That means we need to raise more than $10,500.  Any amount will help toward our goal of this year’s trip.  Simply drop a designated  gift (designated to “ASP”) into Sunday’s collection plate or drop it by the office.

With your generosity not only are you becoming an instrument of ministry through our youth and adults that are going on the trip, but you will also be offering a chance for our teenagers to better understand the position of being an agent of God, becoming the hands and feet of Christ on this earth!  I thank you for all that you have done for us in the past and for you generosity for the future!

WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2021

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN DISTRICT EVENTS

Virtual Spiritual Growth Retreat
“You Lift Me Up”
June 18-19
Via WHOVA AND ZOOM

In addition to 3 plenary sessions with guest speaker Rev. Lisa Beth White and music leaders Catherine Ritch and Rev. Dr. Mark Barden there will be 5 breakout sessions.  You can attend 2 of them, but all will be recorded so you can attend others at a later time.  The breakout sessions are:

  • Tea and Mindfulness Meditation
  • Crocheting Together
  • Reclaiming Sabbath:  Reshaping the Rhythm of Our Lives
  • Juneteenth:  An Uplifting Celebration of Freedom
  • You Lift Me Up — Book Study by Catherine Rich on her book about Armenia

We’ll still be using Zoom for this event, but Whova will help all of us be a “community of women” during the retreat with lots of ways to interact and share with your United Methodist Women sisters.  Whova will make it very simple to join individual sessions with links to all sessions in one place without having to search for that Zoom invitation e-mail!  Register for this event at https://www.wnccumw.org

The Bag Ladies are back in business!!  We will be set up in our usual room at Gifts Galore in November.  Monies raised will support a special project to enhance our worship experience at Memorial.

Please bring your gently used handbags, wallets, eyeglass cases, etc. and put them in the hallway around from the receptionist office (near the Arts & Alter storage room). We are looking forward to this fundraising event- everyone deserves a “like new” bag just for getting through the past year!!  Thank you for your continued support of the Arts and Alter members who work hard to make our church a beautiful place to gather.

NEWEST STAFF MEMBER: SUMMER GORDON
