MONTHLY CCM DROP-OFF

We are hosting monthly “drop-off” donation events at CCM on the last Wednesday of each month. You will pull up to the front of CCM at 10 W. Guilford St. in Thomasville, pop your trunk, and a volunteer will retrieve the donation items.

It’s Back to School time and we are collecting needed supplies for area students. Collection bins are set up outside of the church reception door at the Mission Racks for easy drop-off. Thank you for your generosity helping students with the learning materials they need.

School will begin for the Thomasville City Schools on August 17, but the school buildings will remain empty. Students will learn remotely for a while. It will be imperative for children to have access to the Internet and there are some who do not. We are pleased to partner with TCS to provide an Internet access site for remote learning for students. We will open the church for two-hour periods on select days during the week for students needing Internet access.

In order to accomplish this, we will need church folks who will give a couple hours of their time to be present. This is not a tutoring service. Students will sign up, and we will limit the number of children at each session. All safety precautions will be followed. Tables will be set up to ensure social distancing, and students will be expected to wear masks, wash their hands prior to entering, and have their temperature taken. Children K-8 must be accompanied by an adult.

The church will be open on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 9-11 a.m. and 5-7 p.m.  Two volunteers will be needed for each session. To sign up please use the Signup Genius link here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0545A8AF28A02-remote.

Walk it Out

Good morning! For those of you who may not know me, my name is Danny Frye and I’m the Director of Music at Memorial. I’m grateful for the opportunity to fill in for one of our clergy this morning and provide a 10@10 devotion for today.

When I was asked about filling in today, I was excited to share some thoughts with you, and play a little music, too. That being said, there is a lot going on in my world, and probably yours too. I’m grateful to be employed, and I’m navigating what it looks like to socially distance with 90 university band students, but my university job is intense right now. I’m trying not to be overwhelmed with pandemic worries (I’m struggling here). I’m worried about when my kids will be able to safely go back to school in person. I’m deeply concerned about the injustice and inequality in our amazing country. And I’m sad about the cruelty and lack of empathy we, too often, show one another.

The pace of our lives is so fast, and we all are taking on more and more responsibilities. You may remember the old “Calgon, take me away” commercial slogan that was a plea for a break in our hectic lives. We can all use a moment to disengage from the busyness. I’m sure a lot us would like to get off this ride for a moment.

A few years back, I took my son, Sebastian, and a few of his friends to SpookyWoods for some Halloween fun. Pre-teen boys aren’t always fully forthcoming with information. They all had willingly signed on for the tour, but once we started through the first haunted house, one boy had buried his head in my back with his eyes closed as I dragged him through the house. Another boy was quite scared of the ghouls wielding chainsaws. These boys were quite stressed out over this adventure and were trying to rush their way through the house. My new young friend basically pushed me out the back door, while Sebastian and another friend ran out laughing, but the last in our group (I’ll call him Jack) was nowhere to be found. I waited as other thrill seekers exited, but no Jack. Finally, as I was heading back into the house to find him, a couple of young adults came out, pushing him out in front of them. I asked them where he was, and they said he was standing in a corner refusing to come out. I asked Jack what he was doing, and he replied, “I ain’t messing with no dude with a chain saw. I backed myself into a corner and said, ‘I’m out.’ I told everybody that came by me that they could go ahead because I wasn’t moving.” Jack was completely willing to be patient in his corner and let everyone continue on with their adventure. I guess he thought SpookyWoods would eventually close or something and he could leave peacefully.

The bible offers some guidance and assurances about having patience in trying times. 2 Peter 3:8-9 says:

“But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

The scripture is telling us that time is relative, and that God is always working to fulfill his promises to us. We may perceive this as God being slow to answer our prayers, but we should also understand that God is being patient WITH US, waiting for us to understand the error of our ways and seek his Grace and guidance.

As a musician, I listen a lot to how music speaks to me. I often think I hear God speaking to me through music, either when I’m performing or conducting a group. As part of my devotion this morning, I’m offering one movement from a Bach violin sonata in A minor. The title of this movement is “Andante.” The musical definition of andante is “a walking tempo.” Through this pandemic, I’ve been on a LOT of walks with my wife and family. It’s been a terrific blessing to come out of this time. I’m playing a transcription of this piece on my marimba A marimba is a wooden bar instrument, similar to a xylophone, but with a lower, much warmer sound. I invite you to take the next 5 minutes and stop running, and try walking. Seek God as you walk, because he’s patiently present with us, waiting on us to stop trying to run through everything, and start walking and following Him.  [The recording can be heard at the 5:30 mark at https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=2761054200829983.]
